First of all, you may hear some people say that gear and stats do not matter in GW2. This couldn't be farther from the truth. In GW2 the actual PROCESS of gearing up is not as important as it is in other games because you can obtain the best in slot pieces relatively easy compared to other MMOs. So once you've obtained the BiS pieces, instead of progressing vertically for a few extra stats on your armor, you will be progressing horizontally and working towards gear for it's visual appearance rather than it's stats. But make no mistake, gear DOES matter.
Armor is equipment that is worn to mitigate damage dealt by foes, provide attribute bonuses and change a character's appearance. There are six pieces of armor which can be worn: headgear, shoulderwear, coats, gloves, leggings and boots. Armor is divided into three levels, light, medium, and heavy. Each profession can only wear one level of armor:
Scholars wear light armor. Adventurers wear medium armor. Soldiers wear heavy armor.
Armor can be acquired in several different ways: Purchased from an armorsmith. Crafted through the disciplines of the armorsmith, leatherworker, and tailor. Dropped by a foe as loot. As a reward from the Hall of Monuments. As a PvP reward from a glory vendor.
Rare armor Exchanging tokens with a Dungeon Vendor. Tokens are a reward for completing a dungeon's explorable mode.
Armors are upgraded through the placement of runes. Placing multiple runes of the same type on pieces of armor worn together will give the wearer additional, accumulating benefits. For example, a single Superior Rune of Balthazar will give a +25 bonus to Power, a second will add on a +15% bonus duration to burning, and so forth. This means that the player can accumulate armor set bonuses on any set of armor pieces, rather than having to acquire specific armor pieces in order to finish a set and gain the full bonus. You can have 6 pieces of armor, thus you can equip 6 runes on each one. Armor slots are head, shoulders, body, hands, legs, feet. You can purchase Runes from the Armor vendor in the Mists PvP lobby.
Weapons are upgraded through the placement of sigils. Each weapon may have only one sigil. Sigils have a variety of effects, such as attacks which trigger on critical hits, attribute bonuses which increase as the player kills more enemies without being downed, or switching weapons. You can purchase Sigils from the Weapon vendor in the Mists PvP lobby.
Accessories may be upgraded through jewels. Some jewels may also be used to upgrade all items. You have five accessories and you can place jewels on all of them. Two rings, two earrings, and an amulet. You can purchase Jewels from the Accessory vendor in the Mists PvP lobby.
